Rajsamand, Rajasthan – The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), launched by former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee on December 25, 2000, is completing its 25th anniversary on December 25, 2025. In these 25 years, the scheme has strengthened rural connectivity across the country and laid a strong foundation for social and economic change.
The impact of this scheme can be clearly seen in Rajasthan as well as in Rajsamand district.
To date, approximately 75,000 kilometers of roads have been constructed in the state, connecting 15,983 settlements with all-weather connectivity. In Rajsamand district, 1,891.14 kilometers of roads have been constructed, connecting 319 settlements, at a cost of approximately ₹536 crore.
This scheme is not limited to road construction alone, but has proven to be a game-changer for rural life. Improved roads directly connected villages to schools, hospitals, agricultural markets, and other economic activities, boosting social, educational, and economic development in tribal and rural areas.
In Rajsamand district, the first phase involved the construction of 837.13 kilometers of roads at a cost of ₹174 crore, connecting 319 settlements with all-weather roads. This phase also included the widening and strengthening of 510.86 kilometers of roads at a cost of ₹132.11 crore. Given the need for maintenance and upgrading along with the new roads,
the second phase was initiated in 2013, in which 98 kilometers of roads were widened and strengthened at a cost of ₹47.70 crore.
In the third phase, special emphasis was placed on upgrading rural connectivity roads and through routes. Under this phase, 23 roads totaling 245.15 kilometers have been upgraded at a cost of ₹182.49 crore.
In the fourth phase, 1,638 settlements across the state have been identified for all-weather road connectivity. The first phase proposes road construction and a bridge for 1,216 settlements, with 3,219 kilometers of new roads constructed at a cost of approximately ₹2,089 crore.In Rajsamand district, a settlement has been identified under the fourth phase, from the Amet-Gomti Chauraha road to Udaguda.
This road will be 1 kilometer long and will cost ₹76.63 lakh. The objective of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana is not only physical connectivity, but also to strengthen the rural economy by connecting villages to agricultural markets, colleges, hospitals, and employment opportunities.
